Make ahead appetizers: various food on a table

Hosting a party or potluck doesn’t mean you have to miss out on the fun and spend the whole party in the kitchen. You might ask each guest to bring a dish or turn to make-ahead appetizers as a perfect, time-saving solution for delicious eats that let you relax and enjoy your gathering.

We’ve rounded up our favorite make-ahead appetizers for your next get-together. We’ll cover options that store well, require minimal prep, and accommodate a variety of dietary needs. You’ll also find helpful tips to make hosting less stressful and more fun.

Tips to Make Appetizer Prep Easy and Stress-Free

Prepping your appetizer menu in advance frees up time on the day of your event so that you can tend to your guests and focus on the celebration. Planning and doing the bulk of your actual cooking in advance also limits foot traffic through your kitchen and reduces stress.

Some of these recipes even get better as they sit in the fridge, allowing the flavors to meld together. Here are a few of our go-to tips for prepping your make-ahead appetizers:

Plan Your Menu Strategically

When planning your make-ahead appetizers, create a menu that includes a mix of cold, room-temperature, and reheat-friendly options so everything stays fresh throughout the event. It helps to include a variety of textures and flavors, and plenty of finger foods, to keep guests interested.

Prep Ingredients Where You Can

Prepping individual components of your appetizers is a great way to save time. Whenever possible, get things done before your gathering. Even if it feels like a small task now, things add up on the day of a party — handling the little stuff the day ahead is what makes these easy appetizers, well, easy.

Label and Store Correctly

Once your ingredients are prepped, store them in labeled, airtight containers to ensure everything stays organized and fresh. Proper storage keeps your appetizer recipes tasting great, and good organization saves you even more time.

Choose Crowd-Friendly Recipes

Crowd-pleasing party foods that appeal to everyone are always your best bet for appetizers. Classic options like meatballs or a cheese ball make excellent, easy-to-serve hors d’oeuvres. Bonus points if they’re accompanied by something more sophisticated, like a charcuterie board.

Make-Ahead Cold Appetizers

Deviled eggs with paprika on a plate

Cold appetizers are often the easiest for hosts to prepare ahead of time, and they’re the most likely to get even more flavorful as they sit in the fridge. These appetizers are best made one to two days ahead of your get-together:

  • Deviled eggs: Keep the egg whites and fillings separate in the fridge until just before the party to keep everything fresh.
  • Caprese skewers: Assemble skewers before your event and drizzle them with balsamic glaze just before serving.
  • Cheese or charcuterie board: Prep your cheese and charcuterie components ahead of time and keep them separate in the fridge until the day of.
  • Bruschetta with crostini: Prepare your tomato mixture the day before your party. When it’s time to serve, spoon it over the toasted bread or let your guests top their crostini with a serving spoon.
  • Chickpea salad cups: Like chicken salad, but with chickpeas as the protein for meat-free guests! Mix your chickpeas with mayo, cucumbers, tomatoes, olive oil, and herbs, and store in the fridge. Serve in lettuce cups.

Make-Ahead Baked Appetizers

Baked appetizers are a great way to satiate your guests and bring unique party foods to the table. These make-ahead options are typically best prepared 24-48 hours before your party, placed in the fridge, and covered until you’re ready to bake.

When guests start arriving, simply preheat your oven, place them on a baking sheet, and cook until golden brown for everyone to enjoy. Here are some of our favorites:

  • Stuffed mushrooms: Fill mushroom caps with a mixture of cream cheese, spices, and breadcrumbs. Bake and serve hot.
  • Mini quiches: Egg bites are easy to prepare ahead of time, and you can use a variety of ingredients for different flavors. Try peppers, shallots, cheddar cheese, or bacon, and cook them one to two days ahead of your party. When it’s time to eat, just reheat in the microwave or oven.
  • Puff pastry bites: Get creative and fill your puff pastry or phyllo dough with things like brie or blue cheese, pepper jelly, or prosciutto. Bake ahead of time, then either air-fry or reheat in the oven to crisp up.
  • Sausage balls: Make a flavorful sausage mixture, roll into balls, and place in the fridge, covered. On the day of your event, bake to an internal temperature of 160 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Bacon-wrapped jalapeno poppers: Stuff your jalapenos with cream cheese and wrap with bacon. Place in the fridge up to one day ahead and bake before serving. For added sweetness, sprinkle some brown sugar over the bacon before baking.

Make-Ahead Dips

Dips and spreads are some of the simplest make-ahead appetizers, and they only get better as they sit in the fridge. These can be made one to three days ahead of any potluck, gameday, New Year’s Eve celebration, or casual get-together. Here are a few of our favorites:

  • French onion dip: A savory dip loaded with onions, this spread can be assembled ahead of time and baked on the day of the party.
  • Buffalo chicken dip: A spicy fan-favorite, this dip can be prepared and reheated before serving.
  • Homemade guacamole: Best mashed and mixed the day of, prep your onions, tomatoes, and cilantro the day before for easier assembly.
  • Whipped feta dip: Feta holds up extremely well in the fridge, making this tangy dip a perfect make-ahead appetizer.
  • 7-layer bean dip: Layered with beans, salsa, cheese, sour cream, and more, this classic dip tastes better the longer it sits. Serve with tortilla chips for a crunchy element.
